Why Andrew Garfield Felt Comfortable Lying About His No Way Home Role

Andrew Garfield explains why he had no issue with lying about his secret involvement in Marvel Studios’ latest film, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Andrew Garfield recently discussed why he felt so comfortable lying about his secret involvement in the MCU’s latest smash-hit, Spider-Man: No Way HomeNo Way Home is the third film coming out of Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ collaborative Spider-Man trilogy and is the 27th entry into the overarching MCU franchise. Thanks to the recently introduced multiverse, the film was able to unite three generations of cinematic Spider-Men including Tobey Maguire, Tom H0lland, and Garfield. Various generations of Spider-Man villains come together as well, making the entire film a love letter to the iconic web-slinger’s cinematic history.

Maguire and Garfield’s involvement in the film was a tight-lipped secret in the months leading up to No Way Home’s release. Despite the numerous leaks and rumors that were circulating online, Garfield maintained that he had no part in the film. This, of course, turned out to be a lie used to preserve the surprise of his Spider-Man’s appearance. The actor’s constant and vehement denials quickly turned into something of a Hollywood joke, especially after the movie finally premiered last December and confirmed the actor’s entrance into the MCU once and for all.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Garfield explained why lying about his role in No Way Home was so easy for him. He says that he “loved keeping it a secret” because he felt that his denials weren’t actually lies, but “just a fun gift I’m giving people.” Check out Garfield’s complete statement below:

I loved keeping it secret. I was able to get over my ethical, moral dilemma with whether this is a lie that is justifiable. Is this actually a lie, or is this just a fun gift I’m giving to people?

Disney is notorious for keeping the secrets behind its most anticipated productions under lock and key. Still, the lengths the studio went to in order to keep Maguire and Garfield’s involvement under wraps was seemingly a step further than any other previous project. Even after production images leaked online, both the studio and Garfield continued to hold fast about denying Garfield’s involvement.

Last year was a busy one for Garfield, with the actor juggling press junkets for both The Eyes of Tammy Faye and Tick, Tick… Boom! while simultaneously dodging Spider-Man questions in nearly every interview he gave. Fortunately, the actor’s tenacity seems to have been worth the effort with even the most in-the-loop Marvel fans expressing surprise and joy at the return of Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s respective incarnations of Spider-Man. With Spider-Man: No Way Home opening the storytelling possibilities of the multiverse, Maguire and Garfield will likely be the first of many legacy Marvel characters to reprise their roles in the MCU.
