Veteran Singer Lata Mangeshkar Dies At 92

Lata Mangeshkar was popularly known as the ‘Nightingale of India.’

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar died in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday. She was 92. She was cremated with full state honours at Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park this evening. The funeral was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Lata Mangeshkar was taken to the intensive care unit on January 8 after testing positive for COVID-19. On Saturday, her condition had deteriorated again and she had to be put on ventilator support. She was under medical observation. Lata Mangeshkar was being treated for both pneumonia and COVID-19. Her symptoms were mild but she was in ICU because of her age, family said.

Over the next few weeks, Lata Mangeshkar showed signs of improvement. However, on Saturday, hospital authorities said that Lata Mangeshkar had been put back on the ventilator after her health deteriorated, news agency ANI reported.

Lata Mangeshkar, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Awards, was an icon of Indian cinema, having sung playback for an extensive list of Hindi films; she also sang in several regional languages including Marathi and Bengali.

Lata Mangeshkar, who belonged to a prominent musical family, also composed music as well as produced a handful of films. She was popularly known as the ‘Nightingale of India.’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first ones to share the sad news and said he is “anguished beyond words”.

“The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people,” he tweeted.

Uttarakhand announces two days of state mourning in respect of Lata Mangeshkar

Uttarakhand government on Sunday declared two days of state mourning on the death of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar at Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital.

As per the government’s declaration, the national flag will remain half-masted in the government offices of the state.

No cultural programmes will be organised in this duration.

Earlier, the Central Government declared two days of state mourning from February 6 to 7.

Lata Mangeshkar’s death: Karnataka declares 2-day state mourning

Karnataka government on Sunday announced two days of state mourning as a mark of respect to legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.

During these two days, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast and all public entertainment programs will be prohibited.

“All public entertainment programs are prohibited and National Flag will be flown at half-mast,” Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai said in a statement.

The Central Government has also announced the two-day national mourning to be observed in the memory of Lata Mangeshkar.

Lata Mangeskhar songs to be played at every public spot, government installation for 15 days in Bengal

Soon after declaring a half-day on Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday announced that songs of Bharat Ratna awardee Lata Mangeshkar will be played at every public spot, government installation and traffic signals for the next 15 days.

The Chief Minister said she is mesmerized by the late Lata Mangeshkar’s voice like her other fans and paid a heartfelt tribute Bharat Ratna awardee.

Taking to Twitter, Ms Banerjee wrote, “I pay my heart-felt tribute to the departed icon of India, Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. While offering my sincerest condolences to her family and the billions of admirers that she leaves behind all over the world, I express my deepest sadness at the demise of the genius that the Nightingale of India truly was.”

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, Chief Minister M K Stalin and a host of leaders on Sunday expressed condolences over the death of singer Lata Mangeshkar in Mumbai.

“Deeply anguished on the demise of Bharat Ratna @mangeshkarlata, Governor R N Ravi expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family, all the Bharatiya and the melody lovers in whose heart she will live forever,” said a press release from Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, in his message, said she touched the heart of everyone with her renditions.

“Deeply pained to know that the ‘Nightingale of India’ Lata Mangeshkar has passed away. With a career spanning eight decades, she has touched the heart of every India with her mellifluous renditions in various languages. I convey my heartfelt condolences to her family and fans,” he said in a tweet.

Lata Mangeshkar died on Sunday at an age of 92 years. The legendary singer was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital on January 8 after she was diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia.

Ms Tendulkar arrived at the Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai, where the legendary singer took her last breathe. The former cricketer also said the iconic singer will always continue to live in our hearts through her music.

“I consider myself fortunate to have been a part of Lata Didi’s life. She always showered me with her love and blessings. With her passing away, a part of me feels lost too. She’ll always continue to live in our hearts through her music,”Mr Tendulkar tweeted.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in his condolence message, said that Lata Mangeshkar was an unparalleled musician who conquered the hearts of the world with her melodious voice.

Expressing condolences, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted, “Deeply saddened to know about the passing away of legendary singer Bharat Ratna #LataMangeshkar ji. Paying tribute to the singing icon, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that the ‘Melody Queen of India’ leaves a void in our collective consciousness.

“Deeply saddened to know about the passing away of legendary singer #LataMangeshkar. The ‘Melody Queen of India’ leaves a void in our collective consciousness. She will live through her melody for eternity. My thoughts & prayers are with the bereaved family & her countless fans,” he tweeted.

Boney Kapoor posted a memory with the late singer Lata Mangeshkar and his late wife Sridevi and he wrote: “Deeply saddened by the news of Lata Mangeshkar Ji’s passing away. She leaves behind a huge legacy of songs which will be treasured for generations to come. May her soul rest in peace. Condolences to the family.”
