Umbrella Academy Season 3 Is Massive Says Star

In a recent interview, Emmy Raver-Lampman opens up about the upcoming season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, teasing season 3’s massive scale.

Emmy Raver-Lampman opened up about the upcoming season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, teasing season 3’s massive scale. Raver-Lampman plays Allison, number three of the titular school of super-powered individuals. The series is based on a comic written by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, first published by Dark Horse Comics in 2007.

Following their trip into the past to avert the apocalypse in the present day, things were looking clearer for the Hargreaves children at the end of season 2. Not only had they prevented an apocalypse surrounding the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy in 1963, but they also managed to escape numerous assassination attempts and a full-scale assault by The Handler (Kate Walsh) and the Commission. Taking one of the Commission’s time-traveling briefcase devices, the family believe they’ve returned to their own time, only to realize they have arrived in an alternate timeline where the Sparrow Academy was formed instead of the Umbrella Academy by Sir Reginald Hargreaves (Colm Feore). With the cast being thrown into a world they don’t recognize, one of the stars has teased what’s in store for the characters.

Speaking to Collider ahead of starring in the upcoming thriller, Blacklight, Raver-Lampman opened up about the process behind the Netflix series while teasing what’s yet to come. The star touched on how showrunner Steve Blackman has adapted the source material for television and that while he hasn’t been prioritizing a one-to-one translation, Blackman has been in contact with Way when creating the show’s story. Despite this, Raver-Lampman feels that the show has developed to do its own thing, with the upcoming third season described as “massive.” Check out Raver-Lampman’s response below:

“We’re running adjacent to the graphic novels, but I don’t think Steve is beholden at all to the graphic novels, by needing it to be something that’s verbatim, it needing to reflect exactly what’s happening in the graphic novels and what’s happening on screen. But I do know that Gerard and Steve are in constant communication. So, I don’t doubt that they both know what the other has ideas in what the other is thinking. I think there will always be a connection there, but the further we get into The Umbrella Academy, the TV show, I think it’s finding its own way. It’s finding its own route, which is exciting. … This third season, we’re really, really doing our own thing, and I think the show has found some really cool plots to follow and explore… We’ve started doing ADR and it’s a massive season. There’s just a lot of work in post that has to be done.”

Allison’s storyline in season 3 has been teased previously by the showrunner. In January, Blackman uploaded part of a storyboard to Instagram, sharing an image of a tearful Allison without any other context. Season 2 had left what remains of the family in a heartbreaking situation, as not only did they return to a present where they didn’t exist but had once again lost Ben Hargreaves (Justin H. Min), who had given his life to prevent Vanya (Elliot Page) from causing a devastating explosion. To make matters worse, upon arriving in the new Sparrow Academy timeline, they discover Ben is alive and well but has no memory of them and is number 2 in this alternate universe academy.

With the Hargreaves children being transported into a new universe full of new faces, from the Sparrow Academy to Javon Walton’s as-of-yet unknown character, season 3 promises to be unpredictable. While the Apocalypse was averted, fans have yet to see just how changed the present has been beyond the Sparrow Academy’s walls, meaning the status quo changes could have large-scale ramifications. The series also has to tackle plots such as Sir Reginald’s true otherworldly identity, and the fate of Lila Pitts (Ritu Arya), meaning that the students of the Umbrella Academy still have plenty of work to be done.
