Alina earned the wrath of fans for her racist social media history, but viewers are just as upset with TLC’s lackluster response to the controversy.
Everything about TLC’s response to 90 Day Fiancé franchise star Alina Kozhevnikova’s controversy has disappointed fans. When the 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days cast member’s offensive social media history was uncovered, it instantly became a major scandal that garnered intense criticism from fans who feel a line was crossed. Viewers didn’t have much hope that the network would do the right thing, but TLC’s handling of the situation has been worse than anyone imagined.
Though Alina started out the season as a fan favorite, viewers began to turn on her even before her social media activity came to light. Fans didn’t like the way Alina treated Caleb Greenwood because she was often pressuring him for sex and also wanted him to define the relationship and agree to be exclusive with her. Instead, viewers thought Caleb was reasonable to want to take things slow and see where they go naturally. Then, when it was discovered Alina has made numerous posts and comments in the past that were extremely offensive and racially insensitive, fans were completely done with her and ready for her to be off their screens.
Alina’s offensive posts were discovered in mid-January but it took TLC weeks to issue any kind of response. Fans waited and waited for the network to make a statement, and even when one was given, it was still a let down. TLC took no culpability and offered no real apology. Instead, the network released a garden-variety statement about not tolerating racism and promising to fire Alina from the franchise. There was no mention of an apology for not doing a better job vetting cast members, which angered fans who were just as upset with TLC for not conducting better background checks as they were with Alina for her racist actions.
The lackluster response from TLC was made all the more frustrating because so far no decisive action has taken. Viewers expected to see Alina edited out of the show but in the latest episode of Before the 90 Days, her segments were still in the episode. If TLC had intended to remove Alina’s segments, the network massively bungled the editing attempts and initially re-aired Alina’s segments from the previous episode. Then, in a later airing of the episode, new segments featuring Alina and Caleb were inserted, and it just made fans more confused and upset.
With the way other networks have responded to similar controversies in the past, 90 Day Fiancé viewers didn’t have much hope that TLC would be any different. But the network did even worse than they were expecting. The big problem is that there was no accountability and minimal action, and fans have two words for TLC—do better.
